Inside the EO: Crista Kieffer

Name: Crista Kieffer

Hometown: Born and raised in Abington, Penn., right outside Philadelphia.

College/Chapter: Gamma Rho-Penn State (Go Nittany Lions!)

What was your major? I majored in Risk Management-Real Estate with a minor in International Business.

What was your plan post-graduation? I knew I wanted to do something in Real Estate. I wasn’t sure if it would be residential or commercial though. I was looking into different options and certifications I could get, but then I saw this opportunity with Alpha Phi and knew it was a perfect fit!

Why did you decide to work for Alpha Phi International Fraternity? The job description was ideal for me. Alpha Phi has given me so many opportunities, whether it was meeting my best friends in college, attending different social events, serving on my chapter’s executive board, or being selected to attend ELI, I just knew I wanted to give back and be a part of Alpha Phi’s growth.

What is your job title? Program Manager of Collegiate Housing Services

How long have you been working for Alpha Phi? Since July 7, 2014.

What is your favorite memory of Alpha Phi—as a collegian, alumna or staff member? I have such amazing memories of Alpha Phi. My favorite would have to be attending ELI.It was such a wonderful experience and I got to meet the most amazing Alpha Phis-collegians and alumnae. I learned so much about myself and definitely became a better Alpha Phi. I highly suggest collegians to apply and hopefully have the opportunity to attend!

What do you like best about working at the Executive Office/What drew you to work at the Executive Office? I love the people I work with. From the start, I always felt welcomed and it is such a great environment. I wanted to use my Real Estate experience and education for a great cause.

What are some of your goals for the next few years? My first goal is to get settled into my new apartment. I also want to be able to explore Chicago. I have only been here twice before, so I want to see the sights and get to know the city better. I also am excited to travel to different campuses to see all the Alpha Phi chapter houses.

Do you have any advice for current collegiate members? Enjoy your time in college; it goes so fast! Treasure all the moments with your sisters. Take advantage of all the opportunities Alpha Phi offers. You will learn so much about yourself that will carry into the real world.

Inside the EO: Sarah Jonathan

Name: Sarah Jonathan

Hometown: Clayton, California, which is a small town in the Bay Area

College/Chapter: Lake Forest College, Gamma Epsilon chapter

What was your major? History major with a sociology/anthropology minor.

What was your plan post-graduation? My post-graduation plan was non-existent. When I thought about a plan, I would freak out about what I could possibly do…until the Alpha Phi Executive Office offered me a position. I contemplated coaching full time or heading right to graduate school, but eventually decided that this position was the best fit for me.

Why did you decide to work for Alpha Phi International Fraternity? I was lucky to land an internship with the Fraternity last summer when I was contemplating life after college. Following the internship period, the opportunity came to continue work at the Executive Office…and I couldn’t pass it up. Alpha Phi was such a passion of mine during college, and I didn’t want my connection to the Fraternity to end. This was one significant way I could ensure that it didn’t. Not only can I stay connected to my passion here, but this role also allows me to pursue my other interests, such as coaching lacrosse…because everyone is so supportive of professional and personal endeavors.

What is your job title?  Program Coordinator of Member Support

How long have you been working for Alpha Phi? I have technically been working for Alpha Phi for a year, and it’s crazy to think that it has been that long. After finishing my summer internship I was able to continue helping the staff throughout various departments during my senior year. I officially started my current position in June and can’t believe it has almost been a month.

What is your favorite memory of Alpha Phi—as a collegian, alumna or staff member? Too many favorites to count, but a top memory for me was the first initiation I served as chapter president. I love initiation! I love the idea that members and new members have gone through so much together, from recruitment and new member education to ceremonies and bonding. Then, following initiation, these women can finally and officially be called “sisters.” We are able to welcome them into this organization of amazing women that they will be a part of for the rest of their lives. It’s such a great feeling and a truly special moment…Not to mention our chapter would go to brunch in the caf afterwards, which would turn into a three-course meal and hours of conversation.

What do you like best about working at the Executive Office/What drew you to work at the Executive Office? The environment. It’s a great place to work. A great group of people work here, which brings fun moments and a positive atmosphere that promotes collaboration. Everyone is simply working together towards a good cause.

What are some of your goals for the next few years? Up until recently, I haven’t been able to plan much further than a couple of weeks out—with graduation, a post-grad trip and now working on settling in to a new city so the next few years feel daunting to think about. I’m currently trying to make my apartment livable with my roommate, but maybe once we get past that I’ll think about graduate school or maybe coaching at a different level. I’m excited about the opportunities provided by this job and living in Chicago, so who knows what will happen next?

Do you have any advice for current collegiate members? Take advantage, take note and don’t take things for granted. College flies by way too fast. Post-graduation, life won’t be as simple and you won’t have your friends and sisters so conveniently close. Take advantage of every opportunity to be together. Live it up and enjoy each moment, as cheesy as that sounds.
